1st ACTIVITY:

Vocabulary Practice

We quizzed each other on Fruits/பழங்கள்

We tried to come up with tips on how to remember the vocabulary words, but we couldn’t come up with many tricks for this section of words

We reviewed the fruits and vegetables using an iPhone Tamil app put out by uTalk seen here. They also have an Android app, and it’s possibly available for other phones. It has a section to review words and then it quizzes you on them.

After the fruits, we practiced our numbers.

We reviewed numbers 1-20, and then read through 20, 30, 40, etc. and 100, 200, 300, etc.

We practiced saying random numbers like 33, 67, 42 and then 328, 467, 928, etc. We even practiced saying 1111!

2nd ACTIVITY:

Colloquial Tamil — Unit 3 Dialogue 2: Shopping for Groceries

We practiced dialogue 2 on page 43

As a preview for next week, we also read through the next dialogue we are planning to do Unit 6 Dialogue 1: Planning an outing on page 85

We decided to skip around the book a bit because we were interested in the vocab from this dialogue, including days of the week and family member vocab that we will be studying for next time.

3rd ACTIVITY:
Alphabet practice (reading)

We practiced recognizing alphabet letters from a Tamil-learning website for kids called Noolagam.

We mute the volume and deselect “auto” so we can go at our own pace.

Then we go through each letter and pronounce them aloud.

For this exercise, one consonant is chosen, and the all of the ways it can be combined with the vowels are displayed.

ண் is the consonant we chose to practice.

Alphabet practice (writing)

After this general review, we practiced the letter ண் in all its variations.

It is the 6th consonant in the Tamil alphabet.

It is pronounced “nn”, similar in sound to the ‘n’ in no, but said a bit longer, like ‘nno’.

This letter is used for long n sounds in the middles of words

ண் “in”

We wrote this letter and all of its variations when combined with the different vowels. Then we found Tamil words that used this letter. There are a lot of words that use this letter, but here are a few:

…..

eye — (kann)

கண

…..

wrist — (mannekkattu)

மணிக்கட்டு

…..

butterfly fish — (vanna meen)

வண்ன மீன

…..

triangle — (mukkoonam)

முக்கோனம்

…..

4th ACTIVITY:
Grammar practice

We didn’t practice any verbs or grammar this time, but we are planning to study வாங்கு (vaanku) which means buy/receive for next time.

Vocabulary Practice: numbers

We reviewed numbers 1-20, and looked at multiples of 10 up to 100. We realized that 90 and 900 don’t follow the same pattern as the other numbers.

ex: 30=muppadu, 40=naappadu 50=ambadu

whereas 90=tonnuuru which relates to 100=nuuru

Grammar practice

We wrote the colloquial version of the verb “to come” வா (vaa) and practiced sentences like:

She came / is coming / will come to the store.

I came home.

Rajesh will come to the mountains.

Thanks Arun for your verb-studying suggestions. We’re going to stick to class 7 verbs for now!

I have a question about fruit, or பழங்கள் (pazhangkall) and vegetables, or காய் (kaay)

Most names of fruits seem to end in பழம் , just as many veg names end in காய்
Can you always leave the காய் and பழம் off, or do you always have to say the ending too?

For example, can you say maathullam instead of maathullamparam for pomegranite?

Is there a fruit or veg that you always have to add the பழம் or காய் to?

I am thinking when you write it you should always write the whole thing though?

Thanks for your help Tamil speakers!

1st ACTIVITY:
Colloquial Tamil — Unit 3 Dialogue 1: Eating in a Restaurant.

We practiced dialogue 1 on page 39, taking turns with the different roles. We also quizzed each other on the vocab for this lesson.

As a preview for next week, we also read through the next dialogue: Unit 3, Dialogue 2: Buying groceries.

2nd ACTIVITY:
Vocabulary Practice

We reviewd the numbers 1-20. We converted them from Tamil –> English and also from English –> Tamil. We practiced saying them in order, and then asking each other numbers in English or in Tamil in random order.

We created a dialog using the words: who, what, when, where, why, and who. Take a look at dialog 1 and dialog 2.

க ங ச ஞ are the consonants we chose to practice.

Alphabet practice (writing)

After this general review, we practiced the letter ஞ் in all its variations.

It is the 4rd consonant in the Tamil alphabet.

It is pronounced “nj”, similar in sound to the ending of the word ‘orange’.

However, when vowel sounds are added, this letter is pronounced more like a “gn”. For example, ஞ (gna), ஞொ (gno) This consonant doesn’t seem to be used as much as the other ones.

ஞ் “nj”

We wrote this letter and all of its variations when combined with the different vowels. Then we found Tamil words that used this letter. We couldn’t find very many words this time:

…..

post office — (anjsalakam)

அஞ்சலகம்

…..

daffodil – (eilamanjchal malar)

இளமஞ்சள் மளர்

…..

orange — (aaranjchu)

ஆரஞ்சு

…..

yellow — (manjchal)

மஞ்சள்

…..

4th ACTIVITY:
Grammar practice

We wrote the colloquial version of the verb “to go” பொ (po) and practiced sentences like:

She went / is going / will go to the store.

I went to the beach in the morning.

Vijay will go to the park tomorrow evening.

We’re still trying to find a good way to learn different verbs and practice our verb conjugations! Any suggestions would be great!

1st activity:

Colloquial Tamil — Unit 2 Dialogue 3: Checking into a hotel

We practiced dialogue 3 on page 34, taking turns with the different roles. We also quizzed each other on the vocab for this lesson.

As a preview for next week, we also read through the next dialogue: Unit 3, Dialogue 1: Eating in a Restaurant.

2nd activity:

Vocabulary Practice

We practiced the numbers 1-20. We converted them from Tamil –> English and also from English –> Tamil. We practiced saying them in order, and then asking each other numbers in English or in Tamil in random order.

We also practiced the words yar (who), enna (what), eppodhu/eppa (when), engae (where), eppadi (how) and aen (why). We practiced phrases using these words found on pages 132-133 in the Tamil Dictionary & Phrasebook.

3rd activity:

Alphabet practice

Before we practiced writing some letters, we practiced recognizing them from a website we found for kids outside of Tamil Nadu who are learning Tamil called Noolagam. You can find this site here . There are many cool downloadable worksheets. There are letter lessons located here . We went through the first lesson that just displays the consonants in order and we pronounced them as they showed up on the screen.

After this general review, we practiced the letter ச் in all its variations.

It is the 3rd consonant in the Tamil alphabet.

The pronunciation of the consonant alone is similar to the English word ‘itch’. When vowel sounds are added, this letter can sound like an English ‘ch’ or ‘s’. For example, the letter ச can be pronounced ‘cha’ or ‘sa’ depending on where the speaker is from, or the word being used.

ச் “ich”

We wrote down all the variations of this letter, depending on which vowel sound is connected with it. Then we practiced writing words that we know that use one of these letters, for example:

sambar — (saambaar)

சாம்பார்

rice — (saatham)

சாதம்

square — (sathuram)

சதுரம்

road — (saalai)

சாலை

cow — (pasu)

பசு

4th activity:

Grammar practice

We looked at the verbs ‘po’ and ‘ka’ and found there were many differences between the written forms and colloquial forms of verbs. We really wish we could find some lists of verbs in their colloquial forms, rather than all the proper tenses, which no one really uses in spoken language. Even though the verb charts we have found have been interesting, we have had to create a lot of our own charts because we can’t find the charts we need already made.

Eating is a big part of the Indian culture. It is popular for people to come together and enjoy a good meal at someone’s home. Eating a lot is always encouraged. Here are a few tips I’ve picked up.

இது ரொம்ப காரம். (eithu romba kaaram) = This is very spicy.
‘eithu’ is pronounced similar to ‘either’

I’ve mentioned before that if you want to ask someone if they want something, you follow that ‘something’ with “venuma”?

டீ வேணுமா? (tea veynuma) = Would you like some tea?

காப்பி வேணுமா? (kaappi veynuma) = Would you like some coffee?

A more formal version would be:
காப்பி குடிக்கிறிங்களா ? (kaappi kudikkiringalaa?) = Would you like some coffee?

If you want to complement the chef (let’s say you are eating sambar), you can say:
சாம்பார் நல்லா இருக்கு. (sambar nalla iruku) = The sambar is good.

Or to say it was REALLY tasty, you can say:
சாம்பார் ரொம்ப நல்லா இருக்கு. (sambar romba nalla eiruku) = The sambar is very good.

போதும். (pōthum) = enough
When my mother-in-law is putting food on my plate, if I don’t say “போதும்,” she’ll put a little extra on my plate just to make sure I get enough food. This is the magic phrase I use so I don’t end up stuffing myself every meal.

இது போதும். (eithu pōthum) = this is enough
‘eithu’ is pronounced similar to ‘either’

When the food on your plate is dwindling, you will most likely be asked if you want more food. If you are getting full, point to the remains of your food and say this phrase. This is a good sentence to know, because if it isn’t clear to them if you are full or not, they will gladly give you more food.

When using these phrases, be polite. They love their food, and especially if you are a guest, they will want to treat every meal as if it were a big celebration. The more you eat, the bigger their smiles get.

You can always end with a big thank you!
நன்றி. (nanri, nandri) = thank you
