Vocabulary Practice

• We quizzed each other on Fruits/பழங்கள்
• We tried to come up with tips on how to remember the vocabulary words, but we couldn’t come up with many tricks for this section of words
• We reviewed the fruits and vegetables using an iPhone Tamil app put out by uTalk seen here. They also have an Android app, and it’s possibly available for other phones. It has a section to review words and then it quizzes you on them.
• After the fruits, we practiced our numbers.
• We reviewed numbers 1-20, and then read through 20, 30, 40, etc. and 100, 200, 300, etc.
• We practiced saying random numbers like 33, 67, 42 and then 328, 467, 928, etc. We even practiced saying 1111!

Vocabulary Practice: “I like/ I don’t like…”

• We quizzed each other on vegetables & used the phrase “i like/ I don’t like”
• ex: I like tomatoes. I don’t like onions.
• How do you say “Do you like beans?” “He likes potatoes.”    ??

• We reviewed numbers 1-20, and looked at multiples of 10 up to 100. We realized that 90 and 900 don’t follow the same pattern as the other numbers.
• ex: 30=muppadu, 40=naappadu 50=ambadu
• whereas 90=tonnuuru which relates to 100=nuuru

Most names of fruits seem to end in பழம் , just as many veg names end in காய்
Can you always leave the காய் and பழம் off, or do you always have to say the ending too?

For example, can you say maathullam instead of maathullamparam for pomegranite?

Is there a fruit or veg that you always have to add the பழம் or காய் to?

I am thinking when you write it you should always write the whole thing though?

Vocabulary Practice

• We practiced the numbers 1-20. We converted them from Tamil –> English and also from English –> Tamil. We practiced saying them in order, and then asking each other numbers in English or in Tamil in random order.
• We also practiced the words yar (who), enna (what), eppodhu/eppa (when), engae (where), eppadi (how) and aen (why). We practiced phrases using these words found on pages 132-133 in the Tamil Dictionary & Phrasebook.

இது ரொம்ப காரம். (eithu romba kaaram) = This is very spicy.
‘eithu’ is pronounced similar to ‘either’

I’ve mentioned before that if you want to ask someone if they want something, you follow that ‘something’ with “venuma”?

டீ வேணுமா? (tea veynuma) = Would you like some tea?

காப்பி வேணுமா? (kaappi veynuma) = Would you like some coffee?

A more formal version would be:
காப்பி குடிக்கிறிங்களா ? (kaappi kudikkiringalaa?) = Would you like some coffee?

If you want to complement the chef (let’s say you are eating sambar), you can say:
சாம்பார் நல்லா இருக்கு. (sambar nalla iruku) = The sambar is good.

Or to say it was REALLY tasty, you can say:
சாம்பார் ரொம்ப நல்லா இருக்கு. (sambar romba nalla eiruku) = The sambar is very good.

போதும். (pōthum) = enough
When my mother-in-law is putting food on my plate, if I don’t say “போதும்,” she’ll put a little extra on my plate just to make sure I get enough food. This is the magic phrase I use so I don’t end up stuffing myself every meal.

இது போதும். (eithu pōthum) = this is enough
‘eithu’ is pronounced similar to ‘either’

When the food on your plate is dwindling, you will most likely be asked if you want more food. If you are getting full, point to the remains of your food and say this phrase. This is a good sentence to know, because if it isn’t clear to them if you are full or not, they will gladly give you more food.

When using these phrases, be polite. They love their food, and especially if you are a guest, they will want to treat every meal as if it were a big celebration. The more you eat, the bigger their smiles get.

You can always end with a big thank you!
நன்றி. (nanri, nandri) = thank you

I like this. This makes my Tamil speaking experience easier.

Having said this, is this actually okay to say?  :P
